A Fist Full of Bolts is a wedding photography collective based out of Washington state that shoots weddings worldwide. Long known for their unique image processing, they released their first preset pack in 2017.

01. Intro

A Fist Full of Bolts has long been an industry leader with their post processing. This is the first preset release from the wedding photography trail blazers. The presets feel equally at home in the hippest wedding magazine as they would in a 90’s skate zine.

This is the look that defined PNW photography.

These presets work just as well on the travel + editorial work AFFOB is also known for.

02. Video Overview

03. Overall Look

The presets are classic AFFOB. With lifted shadows, just the right amount of contrast, bright skin tones, muted highlights and pleasing color palettes.

There is just enough desaturation of the blues and greens to let the skin and earth tones take center stage.

Highlights

The faded highlights give the pleasing appearance of more dynamic range, similar to film.

Skin Tones

Gorgeous skin tones, free of color casts.

04. One Click Boom

These presets rarely needed adjustments outside of minor white balance + exposure tweaks. They work well on darker work, but the look really shines as you bring up the exposure.

The presets are not overbearing, letting the image shine through.

05. Technical

The AFFOB presets are based on the Adobe Standard Calibration profile, new cameras are generally supported within a few weeks of release.

The majority of the looks comes from the RGB curves in the color presets, with more tweaking to the hue/saturation. This is greatly preferred to using split toning to achieve color tones in the highlights/shadows.

The one technical issue with these presets was chromatic aberration not being properly removed. In the above video we show how to update the preset to fix that.

06. Consistency

These images were surprisingly universal, working across a wide range of images. The kind of preset that you can sync across not only an entire shoot, but over many shoot, and get consistent results.

07. Typical Tweaks

These presets required very little tweaking to get the desired look. Minor adjustments to exposure and white balance.

Split Toning
untouched.
H/S/L
already dialed.
Exposure
Very Neutral preset, didn't need tweaks.
RGB
didn't need to change.
White Balance
I usually ended up around 5300/+5 for open shade.

08. Strong Points

The skin tones and color palette the color presets achieve is very refined. They work well in both soft overcast light and harsh mid-day sun.

09. Weak Points

The only slight issue found with them was in their chromatic aberration removal, its settings need a slight adjustment to control color fringing.

11. Uniqueness

This look defined a generation of wedding photographers in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. You can see its influence in many of the preset packs available today. These are the original.

12. Value

At $55 for the pack, or $30 individually, these are a steal.
If these were marketed at $150, they’d still be well worth the investment.
